The New York Web Standards Meetup Group will meet this Thursday (24 July 2008) at theMechanism at 7:00 pm.
Google I/O was a two day developer gathering in San Francisco, 28–28 May 2008, which covered building the next generation of Web applications with Google and open technologies.
Jeffrey Barke, senior developer and information architect at theMechanism - New York, attended and will talk about what he learned there, specifically focusing on Gears, Google App Engine and the Google Ajax APIs. Prior to the meetup, you can read a bit about his experience here and watch some of the videos he's gathered at JeffreyBarke.net.

Thanks to John Resig, I just heard about WAI-ARIA, which, "defines a way to make Web content and Web applications more accessible to people with disabilities. It especially helps with dynamic content and advanced user interface controls developed with Ajax, HTML, JavaScript, and related technologies" (WAI-ARIA Overview).
At the moment, I don't know anything about ARIA, but, according to John, it's currently implemented in Firefox 2 and will be supported to a greater degree in Firefox 3. I was also impressed to learn that the Google Reader team has recently added full ARIA support to their application.
So it seems that learning about ARIA is the thing to do and I intend to speak about my findings at the June meeting of the New York Web Standards meetup group.

As I was perusing the glorious mess of code, bits and other fanciful nonsense we refer to as the “web”, I came upon some delightfully useless .js files and could think of no other purpose for it than to share them with the small, yet potent & planetary contingency that is our Readership…
Behold, disbelievers! A tutorial that allows you to change the favicon in your browser (on Opera and Firefox only) via a tickling of your keys…Have a peek.
Michael Mahemoff, a wildly talented London-based software & usability dude, as well as the author of Ajax Design Patterns, presumably came up with these scripts, so don’t for a second think that we’re slagging the cat. You will find it a worthwhile expedition to dig around his site.
But seriously, if you can think of a real world application of the mighty Favicon Demo, please let us know. Or perhaps, sometimes you just have to do stuff because you can, and ask the questions later…
