Entertainment Magazine Teams with theMechanism, LLC, for Huge Online Impact
New York, NY (PRWEB) December 1, 2004
When GIANT, the “ultimate entertainment magazine,” was looking for the ultimate online presence to reflect their publication’s redesign, they once again turned to maxi-media design firm, theMechanism. “Our goal from the very beginning was to create an interactive GIANT experience for the publication’s growing legion of fans. When we were approached to do the redesign, we decided to take the online experience to the next level, while seamlessly incorporating the new look and feel of the magazine,” said Dave Fletcher, Founding Partner and Creative Director of theMechanism. read more
One key feature of the site, a virtual smorgasbord for GIANT’s entertainment-obsessed readers, is a new- improved GIANT jukebox. The jukebox not only showcases a mix of independent and signed music artists, but also allows listeners to vote on individual tracks. “This is an amazing opportunity for unsigned bands to receive national exposure alongside established acts, as well as giving them the ability to see how their songs rate with site visitors,” said Fletcher. The GIANT jukebox is featured in a small, unobtrusive window and can be played in a continuous loop, if desired.
The non-linear content navigation continues to encourage visitors to explore the site through multiple avenues. An even greater number of popular “Easter egg-like” links are dispersed throughout the site, revealing interesting entertainment tidbits, while also increasing the length of visitors’ stay. GIANTmag.com visitors also get the opportunity to participate in exclusive GIANT sponsored parties, contests and promotions.
“By utilizing clean, efficient markup and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), we’re able to update the entire site every month by changing a single file, coinciding with color palette shifts in the printed publication. We’re extending the brand for the audience, creating an instant visual connection to the latest issue at the newsstand.” said partner, Anthony Shafto, from theMechanism’s UK office. The relaunched site introduces a unique feature that allows leaderboard banners to be hidden, further allowing visitors to control their online experience.
“We share GIANT’s vision of a total pop culture experience and are working to further create a full sensory experience for their readers. Future site plans include audio interview segments with featured entertainment personalities, as well as a few other tricks that we have up our sleeves. We want to make the publication come alive,” added Fletcher.
“Thanks to theMechanism, our online presence is way beyond being just a companion piece, but has become an integral part of the complete GIANT experience,” said Jamie Hooper, President and Publisher, GIANT Magazine. “Now, with the additional features that theMechanism has integrated into the site’s redesign, they have once again proven themselves to be creative superheroes. Luckily for the world, they use their powers for good, rather than evil,” said Jamie Hooper, Publisher, GIANT Magazine, with a smile.

By combining urban legend, horror entertainment and digital design expertise, Manhattan-based design firm, theMechanism, has created a site that not only captures visitors’ attention, but also their imagination. The web site, is the online promotional vehicle for the upcoming independent film, Satan’s Playground, by renowned horror director, Dante Tomaselli.
The film, which incorporates the famous legend of the Jersey Devil, and focuses on a vacationing family who find evil in the depths of New Jersey’s wooded Pinelands, will be released on October 31, 2004. Dave Fletcher, Founding Partner, theMechanism, conceptualized the film’s online marketing campaign. “We wanted to slowly build excitement to have the story unfold in front of visitors’ eyes, layer by layer, while also increasing the site’s email database and return visitor ratio,” said Fletcher.
This was successfully done through a series of interactive postcards, “written” by the story’s vacationing Bruno family. Each digital postcard features a pre-launch countdown timer, authentic photography and design, and a compelling message that reveals subtle clues about the film’s plot. The timing of the postcards keeps visitors returning to the site, again and again, as the opening date of the movie approaches. Visitors are also able to e-mail the cards to friends, giving the site an additional viral marketing edge.
Future site plans are still under wraps, however, Fletcher reveals that more interactive surprises are in store. “We are planning on drawing the viewer deeper into Satan’s Playground. So far in, that they may never want, or be able, to leave,” said Fletcher with a smile.
