theMechanism takes Jonathan Ward London's Scented Candle Business Into the Global Retail Market with Custom E-commerce Platform

New York, NY September 9, 2009

London, England and New York, NY—9 September, 2009—theMechanism, a multi-disciplinary design agency with offices in New York, London, and Durban, South Africa launches global E-commerce Web site for Jonathan Ward London [http://jonathanwardlondon.com/].

“Jonathan Ward London has a remarkable product range and we knew from the start what a superb opportunity we had in being asked to conceive an end-to-end E-commerce system that would service a global market”, said Anthony Shafto, theMechanism’s Managing Director, EMEA. “What’s more, we were excited by the challenge of providing a single back-office solution that would handle online retail orders alongside wholesale orders without the need for any significant investment in infrastructure.”

Pete Everett, theMechanism’s Project Management Director, EMEA, continued: “We wanted the user experience to compliment the craftsmanship and elegance of the Jonathan Ward London brand and its product line with effortless shopping facilities. A custom-built E-commerce system with comprehensive Content Management functionality and seamless integration with PayPal’s payment processing services was the best way to achieve this.

But the truly unique aspect of the project for us was developing a custom application on the Salesforce.com platform that inter-operates with the Web site in real-time. We store all our user, product and order data in Salesforce.com and expose it to the Web site via Web Services—the data is manipulated by both systems synchronously. The beauty is that user and order data for retail customers can be entered at either end. It sits in Salesforce.com alongside all account and order data for wholesale customers where everything is then immediately available to the Customer Relationship Management capabilities for which Salesforce.com is renown." Oliver Shepherd, theMechanism’s Technical Director, EMEA added: "In essence, we’ve made a single repository for all the operational data the business needs—and it’s all accessible via a browser and/or an iPhone application with zero infrastructure maintenance costs.”

On working with theMechanism, Jonathan Ward, Founder and Creative Director of Jonathan Ward London, comments: “theMechanism came recommended as expert user experience designers and developers and I quickly saw why. They demonstrated meticulous attention to detail and showed deep sensitivity and commitment to the brand’s vision. I always felt confident in their ability to deliver a robust technology solution and beautiful design, but beyond that, the intelligence and creativity of their team has touched so many aspects of the business. They are more than just Web Designers, they are smart people who can immerse themselves in someone else’s business with transformative effects.”

New York, NY April 7, 2009

NEW YORK, NY April 7, 2009 – theMechanism, a multi-disciplinary design agency with offices in New York, London and Durban, South Africa, announces that the NY Web Standards Meetup Group http://www.meetup.com/standardista/calendar/9593116/  will address Typography for the Web, at theMechanism’s New York office 440 9th Avenue, 8th floor at 7:00 pm on April 16, 2009.

Typography for the Web will teach how to establish a CSS foundation for typography across a Web site using relative font sizes, how to implement text replacement practices for specially formatted headers and how to polish detailed typography. While only basic CSS knowledge is required, demonstrations will include advanced techniques applicable for front-end developers. Special attention will be given to developing typography skills necessary for viewing the Internet on non-traditional mediums such as mobile devices, netbooks, and wide screen monitors.

NY Web Standards keynote speaker, Christy Gurga will present different perspectives on formatting type online and demonstrate immediate, usable methods. “During this event, the audience will learn what Typography for the Web is, why it's necessary and how to use it to make Web sites developed with customized type remain flexible and extensible," said Christy Gurga, Designer/Programmer at theMechanism – New York.

NY Web Standards April 2009 will focus on Typography for the Web  with attendees from the web design and development fields expected to attend an evening of comprehensive deliberations and networking.  As a monthly event, the NY Web Standards Meetup is focused on bringing valuable information, trends, insights and best practice development techniques to the web development community.

theMechanism Redesigns UK TV Listings Web Site OntheBox.com in Preparation for US Launch

London England and New York, NY March 18, 2009

London—18 March, 2009—theMechanism, a multi-disciplinary design agency with offices in New York, London, and Durban, South Africa, announces the relaunch of OntheBox.com, the UK’s leading TV listings Web site. The new Web site provides programme schedules for over 200 UK television channels, as well as radio and cinema listings for films showing throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

“When we first launched OntheBox.com in June 2006, we were confident that it would become a popular resource for television viewers. Today, Google ranks OntheBox.com number one in the UK for the search term ‘TV’ and ‘TV listings,’” said Anthony Shafto, managing director, EMEA, theMechanism. “The site has more than 25,000 registered users, 1.5 million unique visitors per month and it feeds the TV listings for The Sun and The London Paper. With this latest redesign of www.OntheBox.com, we have introduced significantly improved functionality and far richer content. Together with our colleagues at www.OntheBox.com, we have mapped out a detailed plan for the site’s evolution, which we believe will continue to make it the UK’s favourite guide to TV, film and radio.”

In addition to designing the site’s visual identity and user interface, theMechanism built all site functionality including the ability for users to create their own custom listings, which can be seen at: http://www.OntheBox.com.

“Being the number one Google search result for a term as popular as ‘TV,’ is fantastic for bringing traffic to the Web site, but it also brings technical challenges to ensuring that the Web site be available to a substantial number of concurrent users,” added Oliver Shepherd, technical director, EMEA, theMechanism. “To maintain peak performance and meet our users’ expectations for quick-loading Web pages, we designed a granular, on-demand caching model that allows us to serve two weeks of TV and radio scheduling information in any conceivable combination of channel, date and time span for 200 TV channels and 25 radio stations at an average response rate of 1.5 seconds.”

"Here at Media Corp., we are excited to offer our users a new and much more powerful service in OntheBox.com. Working with theMechanism to develop a custom built site incorporating TV, film and radio listings tailored to the users’ personal preferences makes us confident that OntheBox.com will continue to be the premier destination for those who want to know what’s on, where and when. We couldn’t be more pleased with how this new version of the site has turned out and look forward to our continued work with theMechanism to further develop it and launch its US version,” said Justin Drummond, CEO, Media Corporation plc.
