Background

Giant Magazine's Founder, Jamie Hooper, came to theMechansim to design their first website due to their appreciation of our design style and approach.

Solution

GIANT and themechanism worked collaboratively to create an online vehicle that is inseparable from the print publication.

Our goal was to create a GIANT experience, rather than just a companion piece. The result is a virtual smorgasbord for their entertainment-obsessed readers. Site features included a jukebox, courtesy of Groundswell Music, showcasing independent music artists.

Giant Version 1.0 was an amazing opportunity for unsigned bands to receive national exposure and for site visitors to be the first on their block to discover emerging artists. The non-linear content navigation encouraged visitors to explore the site through multiple avenues. Unique and sometimes irreverent links are dispersed throughout the site, revealing interesting entertainment tidbits, while also increasing the length of visitors' stay. Visitors to the site also were presented with the opportunity to participate in exclusive GIANT sponsored contests and promotions.

The new site was powered by a unique XML-driven Macromedia Flash-based system that collectively informs the tiered navigational structure, allowing for easy bi-monthly updates to the color palette, navigation icons and text as well as news and music.

The publication, which was ranked in 2004 as one of Fast Company Magazine's "101 Ideas, People and Trends that will Change the Way We Work and Live in 2005," saw a jump in subscribers and interest after launching the site.

“Thanks to theMechanism, our online presence is way beyond being just a companion piece, but has become an integral part of the complete GIANT experience. Now, with the additional features that themechanism has integrated into the site's redesign, they have once again proven themselves to be creative superheroes. Luckily for the world, they use their powers for good, rather than evil.”
